When in Rajasthan, you just cannot miss to have a Rajasthani thali and what better place for this than Gypsy Dining Hall in Jodhpur. It is a vegetarian restaurant and during our one-week stay in Jodhpur, we made the most of this place.

AMBIENCE

It is a common restaurant with nothing fancy on the ambience front. Do not expect fine dining. It’s a crowded place. Go here only to enjoy their Rajasthani Thali.

FOOD

This is their forte. People swarm this restaurant for two reasons:

  1. Authentic Rajasthani taste
  2. Reasonable price

To begin with, they serve you an empty thali and start filling it. At first, you might be taken aback by the tiny katoris, tiny bread size etc. But that’s an illusion because you’ll leave this place overstuffed, that I can guarantee. I was waiting for all the items to be displayed on my thali to take a picture when one of the waiters asked us to start eating because more was coming. So, there was dhokla, namkeen, pakoras, chutneys as starters, moving on to sabzis, paneer, paranthas, rotis etc.

Dal Baati Chumra and Bajare ki roti were my personal favorites.

You pay a fixed thali price and after that, you can ask for a second helping or even a third or fourth as per your appetite and they will not charge you extra.

SERVICE

Superfast! They don’t let your thali be empty until you tell them to stop. They will be around for more helping with extra food just waiting to serve you. And just as soon as you are done with eating, you might prefer being courteous enough to leave if there are others already in the queue to get a table. Telling you so because we wanted to sit and relax after enjoying such a hearty meal but got up seeing the crowd.

PS: Best to go there on empty stomach. They also have a Gypsy snack restaurant on the ground floor for quick bites. We could not explore it because we were more curious about the thali.
